BTCC: EXCELR8 to run new Hyundai i30 in 2020
BTCC have announced that team EXCELR8 will return to the grid in 2020 with a pair of brand new Hyundai i30 Fastback N Performances.
The independent team started their first BTCC campaign in 2019, and operated MG6s which frequently saw action at the back-end of the order.
The experienced team, however, have produced multiple cars in their past, most notably over 70 Mini CHALLENGE cars which compete in the UK, China, and Japan. Therefore, it is hoped that the Hyundais will demonstrate competitive pace in the upcoming season.
Unlike the very popular i30 N Performance hatchback, which debuted in 2017, the 2019 Fastback has rarely seen action in any races across the globe. The Fastback is calculated to have a 7% increase in torsional stiffness over the hatchback thanks in part to its coupe-like body.
Design of the car started in late September, and it is rumoured that the team have the support of multiple key players in Hyundai’s UK Dealership network.
As expected with the hybrid future of the BTCC, EXCELR8 have also made contact with Cosworth Electronics, the driving force for the 2022 power-systems.
Oliver Sheperd, EXCELR8’s Team Principal speaking to the BTCC, said:
“The build of the Hyundais marks the next stage in our multi-year plan to become a title contender in the British Touring Car Championship.”
Alan Gow, BTCC Chief Executive, followed:
“It’s fantastic to see another new marque join the BTCC, this time with EXCELR8 Motorsport. Hyundai is a globally recognised brand, which has made a big impact in other forms of motorsport already.”
