MotoGP: Maverick Vinales Confirms Two-year Yamaha Contract Extension
Maverick Vinales will remain with the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP Team until the end of the 2022 season after it was announced the Spaniard would remain with the Iwata manufacturer for a further two seasons.
Vinales joined the Yamaha team in 2017, replacing the Ducati bound Jorge Lorenzo, after a two-year stint with Suzuki.
During his time with Yamaha, Vinales has claimed six wins and a further thirteen podiums.
Vinales is the first rider to confirm their plans beyond 2020, with more expected before the season kicks off in Qatar.
Speaking about his contract extension, Vinales commented:
“I’m extremely happy because I feel like I get to keep my own team, this will be the second year with my current crew, and after this I have two more years to look forward to. I’m so excited! I think that if we keep working really hard, we are heading the right way.
“Our main objective is, as always, to be World Champion and to bring Yamaha the number one honour again. I will try my best!”
Vinales’ teammate for the 2021/2022 season remains to be seen, however, it is most likely between current Monster Energy Yamaha rider Valentino Rossi and last year’s breakthrough star Fabio Quartararo.
MotoGP action resumes in February, with the first pre-season test of 2020 at the Sepang International Circuit on February 7/8/9th.
