CIK-FIA Karting: Championship Defers Brazil’s Hosting due to COVID-19
With the current COVID-19 situation, the organisers of this years FIA CIK Karting World Championship for the OK and Junior classes – originally scheduled to be held in Brazil on 29th October-1st November 2020 at the Birigui Circuit in São Paulo – to be pushed back to 2021 with teams and drivers best interests at mind considering the majority of the competition are based in Europe.
The CIK-FIA understands the circumstances and aims to show consideration towards the championships competitors. An alternate venue in Europe is being discussed for 2020 with the Brazilian circuit being pushed back to 2021 before taking the world karting stage. Circuits such as Genk in Belguim and South Garda in Italy and even Paul Fletcher International in the UK are likely circuits to get the call to host the World Karting Championship.
President of the CIK-FIA, Felipe Massa commented:
“We are all looking forward to the CIK-FIA Karting World Championship coming to Brazil this year, although these uncertain times mean it is necessary to postpone Birigui to next year. We must act in the best interests of our competing teams and drivers and adapt our calendar accordingly. It is our absolute intention to bring Birigui back to the calendar in 2021.”
Last years OK category went to Lorenzo Travisanutto for the second year running. With Thomas ten Brinke taking the OK Junior title.
