F1: Confirmed Ricciardo signs for McLaren
In a crazy week for Formula 1, Daniel Ricciardo confirmed he will join McLaren for the 2021 season.
The current Renault driver will replace Carlos Sainz with the Spaniard moving to Ferrari next season.
Ricciardo, 30, said: “I am so grateful for my time with Renault and the way I was accepted into the team. But we aren’t done and I can’t wait to get back on the grid this year. My next chapter isn’t here yet, so let’s finish this one strong. Merci.”
McLaren CEO Zak Brown added: “Signing Daniel is another step forward in our long-term plan and will bring an exciting new dimension to the team, alongside Lando.
“I also want to pay tribute to Carlos for the excellent job he has been doing for McLaren in helping our performance recovery plan. He is a real team player and we wish him well for his future beyond McLaren.”
Renault now has a vacant seat for 2021. The return of Fernando Alonso is possible whilst the impressive Christian Lundgaard could make a big step up to Formula 1 having raced in Formula 3 last year.
There is also the chance of Renault not being on the grid at all either from 2021 or 2022.
