BTCC: Laser Tools withdraws from sponsoring Aiden Moffat Racing
Laser Tools have dramatically announced its withdrawal from the British Touring Car Championship after nine seasons. Aiden Moffat Racing will continue in the BTCC as an independent team.
Laser Tools Racing debuted at Knockhill in 2013 with 16-year-old Scottish driver Aiden Moffat. They had a tough debut in the championship, with the best result of 14th place with Moffat onboard.
Moffat would continue with the team throughout the full nine years. He would achieve the team’s first podium at his home round at Knockhill in 2015. Two years later Moffat would claim the team’s first race win at Donington Park.
Ash Sutton would sign for the team in 2020 and would take the Laser Tool Racing team to their first championship. Just one year later Ash Sutton would do the unthinkable and would win the title again in 2021. The team would take both the Teams’ championship and the Drivers’ championship in a perfect season for the team.
Chairman of Laser Tools, Martin Smith commented: “We’ve had a great nine years in the BTCC, and I am particularly proud of the 2021 season as winners of the Teams’ Championship and Drivers’ Championship in the same year.
“I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved with the team during our years of competing in the BTCC — it really has been a “team” in the true sense of the word, and everyone involved over the years, in whatever capacity, has my heartfelt thanks. I would also like to thank other partners who have joined us in this success story.
“And of course, we must thank Aiden Moffat and the rest of the Moffat family who have offered so much involvement and sheer hard work into this project. We wish them well for the future.
“Now, it’s time for a new challenge, and we have some exciting plans in place for 2023. However, we are open to new ideas and new offers to take the team forward.”
Aiden Moffat looks to be returning to the championship in 2023 with the team TBL’s run under the ‘Aiden Moffat Racing’ banner. The team will have two TBL’s for the 2023 season, leaving two seats available for the championship.
