Fernando Alonso confirms return to F1
Fernando Alonso will return to Formula 1 next season after signing a contract with Renault.
Renault announced on Wednesday that Alonso will partner Esteban Ocon on a two-year deal.
“It’s a great source of pride and with an immense emotion I’m returning to the team that gave me my chance at the start of my career. The team wants and has the means to get back on the podium, as do I,” the 38-year-old said.
Alonso has been in talks with Renault since November 2019 and former Renault team boss and close friend of Alonso, Flavio Briatore said the two-time champion is ready to return to the sport.
Cyril Abiteboul, Team Principal of Renault, said: “The signing of Fernando Alonso is part of Groupe Renault’s plan to continue its commitment to F1 and to return to the top of the field.
“His presence in our team is a formidable asset on the sporting level but also for the brand to which he is very attached.”
This year, Alonso will compete in the Indy 500 in August having won back to back Le Mans and the FIA World Endurance Championship title with Toyota since he left Formula 1 in 2018.
It will be Alonso’s third spell at Renault (2003-2006 and 2008-2009) having won two titles with them.
