BSB: Andrew Irwin Parts Company with Honda Racing
Despite proving a valuable member to the Honda Racing team throughout 2020, picking up three wins, Honda have announced Andrew Irwin will part ways with the British Superbike team.
Proving a multiple-race winner in 2020, Irwin won at Thruxton for the team last year. Despite this, the two have chosen not to continue their partnership, with Irwin stating on Twitter;
“Just to clarify, it was my decision to leave the team and I wish them all the best in the future.”
Andrew Irwin
Irwin had been the driving force at the start of the season, picking up back-to-back victories during the opening round at Donington Park. Leaving the first round, he and brother Glenn Irwin led the Rider’s Championship and were early title favourites.
“Honda Racing can announce that Andrew Irwin will not be continuing with the team for 2021. Parting ways after a successful two years with Honda Racing, Andrew has decided it is time for a new challenge in his racing career.
“During his time with the Honda team Andrew secured his first-ever British Superbike Championship victory at Thruxton in 2019. This season he enjoyed three further wins taking the top step at the opening round at Donington Park, in what was the debut race for the all-new Fireblade.
Unfortunately for Andrew, this momentum did not last long, failing to record another podium for two months. He would hit back with a win upon the series return to Donington Park, but it would do little for his title aspirations, finishing the year sixth on 172 points, 54 behind teammate Glenn Irwin.
“Andrew played a pivotal role in the development of the Fireblade with his hard work and determination contributing to the team’s success during the 2020 season.
“Andrew will always be a part of the Honda Racing family and everyone in the team and Honda UK would like to thank him for his hard work, we wish him all the best in his future racing endeavours.”
Honda Press Statement
So far no statement has been made whether the Glenn will continue in Honda in light of the decision.
