FE Talk: Three UK rounds could conclude the current season
Every motorsport series are in big negotiations as they try to sort out a calendar for the rest of the year as the coronavirus outbreak pushes past its peak across Europe.
The ABB FIA Formula E Championship is in a mixed position compared to other series’. Five races have been completed so only two more ePrix need to be ran in order to validate the season.
However, the series is a street circuit based championship and current chairman Alejandro Agag has said permanent tracks will almost certainly be used and the season must be completed by the end of September.
Agag has recently added that in the worst case scenario is that Formula E may have to abandon city races for up to three years. If cities are not completely safe, the all-electric racing series will not race on street circuits according to the Formula E founder, of course this varies from country to country.
It is understood that one of the options is for a Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Donnington Park trio to conclude the season. All three races would take place behind closed doors.
If travel restrictions are still in place in July and August, this scenario is likely to play out considering many of the Formula E teams are based in the UK.
Formula E is keen to have at least one race in Britain whilst Germany and South Korea are being kept under consideration.
Berlin’s Tempelhof Circuit is not a full street circuit so would be easier to organise than most other ePrix.
Meanwhile, things are improving substantially in Asia so if travel is viable, South Korea could still host their intended race on the streets of Seoul.
South Korea has recorded its first day of no locally transmitted cases of the coronavirus and is an important market for the automotive industry.
Agag has also said that Formula E can race behind closed doors with less than a thousand people so any country which imposes a limit of 1000 people at an event, can be met by Formula E.
An announcement is expected later this month on what Formula E’s plans are for the remainder of season six following the official confirmation that the New York and London rounds on the original calendar were cancelled.
