Moto2: Introduction to the 2023 rookies

Moto2 is approaching its 13^th season as a Grand Prix class and has exciting new talent moving into the class this year. But who are the rookies for the 2023 season?

Izan Guevara

The reigning Moto3 world champion, Izan Guevara, will move up to Moto2 in 2023, continuing with GasGas. Guevara will be joined by experienced Moto2 rider Jake Dixon, who will continue with the team.

Izan Guevara claimed seven race wins and 12 podiums throughout the year with the GasGas team. He would fight for the championship against his teammate, Sergio Garcia, taking the title with two races to go.

The Spanish rider was the 2020 CEV Repsol Moto3 champion against riders such as Xavier Artigas and Pedro Acosta. He would move to Moto3 in 2023 and would claim his first race win at the American Grand Prix.

Sergio Garcia

Spanish rider Sergio Garcia will also be joining the Moto2 grid in 2023 with the Flexbox HP40 Pons team. His teammate this season will be fellow Spaniard Aron Canet, who will spend his second year with the team. Canet finished third in the 2022 World Championship standings, proving how competitive the team is.

Garcia had a great 2022 season in Moto3, finishing the season, second in the World Championship. He would end the year behind his teammate Guevara after a season-long battle.

Sergio Garcia would claim 10 podiums throughout the year, including three race wins with the GasGas team. His last race win would come in Italy, eventually allowing Guevara to take the title at Australia.

Dennis Foggia

Experienced Moto3 rider, Dennis Foggia will move up to the intermediate class in 2023 with the Italtrans Racing Team. His teammate this season will be Joe Roberts who finished ninth in the standings with the team.

Foggia’s first season in Moto3 came in 2018 after three wildcards the previous season. He would later move to the Leopard team where he would fight for the title. He would finish third in the 2022 standings with the team.

Foggia would finish as the first Honda in the standings and ahead of his teammate, Suzuki. He would score eight podiums throughout the season, including four race wins at Indonesia, Britain, San Marino and Thailand.

Darren Binder

Darren Binder will move from the MotoGP class in 2023 joining the new Liqui Moly Husqvarna team. The South African will be joined by Luka Tulovic, who steps up from the JuniorGP Moto2 class.

Binder would move to MotoGP from the Moto3 class, with the RNF Yamaha team, where his teammate would be Dovizioso. He would finish his first year in the Premier class in 24^th in the World Championship standings.

He would score a total of 12 points throughout the year in MotoGP, with a best finish of 10 place. His best result would be at the second round of the Championship, in Indonesia in wet conditions.

Rory Skinner

Making the jump from the British Superbike class this season is Rory Skinner, who joins the American Racing team. He will be joined by Sean Dylan Kelly, who spends his second year in the World Championship.

Skinner would ride for the FS3 Kawasaki team in 2022 and would have Lee Jackson as a teammate. He would finish eighth in the standings, after having to miss the last eight races after an injury.

He would claim five podiums throughout the season, with his best result at Oulton Park. The Scottish rider had two wildcards in the Moto2 class in 2022, finishing 21^st at both Silverstone, and Austria. 

Alex Escrig 

Alex Escrig will join the Moto2 grid with Forward Racing, stepping up from the Moto2 European Championship. He will be joined by Marcos Ramirez, for an all-Spanish rider line-up.

Escrig is no stranger to the Grand Prix paddock, racing in MotoE in 2022 and the Moto2 European Championship. He would finish ninth in the MotoE standings, with a best finish of fifth.

Escrig would have a great year in the Moto2 European Championship, finishing third in the standings. He would ride with the Yamaha-backed Stylobike Racing Team and would claim six podiums. The Spaniard would take two race wins throughout the year, at Jerez and Portimao.

Borja Gomez

Borja Gomez will move to moto2 this season with the Fantic Motor team, after moving up from the ESBK Championship. His teammate this season will be Italian, Celestino Vietti who finished seventh in last year’s Championship.

Gomez would take multiple race wins in the ESBK Championship and would wildcard in both, Moto2 European and World Championship. He would wildcard at Valencia for the Moto2 European Championship and would finish seventh in his first race.

Borja Gomez would also wildcard in the final round of the Moto2 World Championship in 2022, with the Pons team. He would qualify in 21^st position but would finish the race in 12^th place, scoring World Championship points.

Kohta Nozane

Kohta Nozane will move from the WorldSBK Championship, racing for the VR46 Master Camp team. His teammate this year will be Manuel Gonzalez who continues with the Master Camp squad.

Nozane has spent the last two seasons in WorldSBK with the GRT Yamaha team, he would have a tough 2022 season finishing in 20^th. The Japanese best result would come in Italy, with a 12^th place finish in race one.

Before WorldSBK, Nozane wildcarded in multiple Grand Prix races, including one race in the MotoGP class. His best finish in the Grand Prix paddock would be a 16^th at the 2013 Japanese Grand Prix in the Moto2 class.
