MotoGP: Marc Marquez to undergo fourth operation
The six time MotoGP world champion will have a fourth operation on his right arm after the Italian Grand Prix. The Spaniard will also most likely take no further part in the 2022 season.
Marc Marquez and Albert Puig announced after qualifying that Marquez will go for an operation in Minnesota. Marquez first broke his arm back in 2020 at the Spanish Grand Prix and after three operations he continues to struggle.
2022 has not been any easier for Marquez as he has struggled with his double vision problems. The Spaniard has missed two races this season and will most likely miss the rest of the season. As well as his health issues Marquez has found it difficult to adapt to the drastically different 2022 Honda RC213V.
Marquez said “Since I had the first injury with the arm everything has been complicated and the infection was the worst thing. The doctors did an amazing job to take care of that and recover my bone.
“It was a success, but after I came back I feel a big limitation [with my arm]. I never gave up and kept pushing and followed the doctors’ advice.
“I don’t enjoy [riding now]. I have a lot of pain and loss of power, so I can’t ride like I want. I also start to injure my shoulder because I’m pushing the left arm too much [to compensate].
“I believe soon I will come back [after this surgery]. I don’t know exactly when, but now is the time to operate because the doctors say there is a clear problem and also that an operation can be done.”
Repsol Honda team manager Alberto Puig added: “18 months ago Marc had his last surgery on the right humerus and since then it has been a long process of rehabilitation and hard work with his medical crew in Madrid.
“Of course, we have been making quite a lot of progress but unfortunately his position on the bike is not what he really needs to race as he wants and meet his expectations.
“After analysing the situation, finally yesterday we had the news that [another] surgery can be done. It can be done now because the bone is not soft, it is ready. For that reason Marc will stop after this grand prix and have this surgery in the US.
“It’s been a long period with a lot of suffering and we want to thank him for his efforts.”
