VW Cup: Dominant Display Sees Depper Dash to Victory in Race 2
A second win of the season ensures Jack Depper leaves Castle Combe with a commanding 15 point lead in the Maximum Networks Volkswagen Racing Cup. The Maximum Motorsport driver was untouchable throughout as he continues his run of podiums he started upon his return at the back end of 2020.
There was drama even before the green flag lap as reverse grid polesitter Jeff Alden slid into the barrier at the chicane. He would lead the field away, but not before a frantic mending job on the grid saw him lead the Volkswagen’s away for the final race in Wiltshire.
Sadly for Alden, this wouldn’t be a sign for how the race would go as he found himself swamped on the run down to Quarry. Alden remained physical throughout, but unfortunately could not keep up with the leaders losing third to Russell Joyce on the second lap as the Power Maxed Car Care Racing driver undercut the Matrix Motorsport driver.
Up front, it was the usual duo leading proceedings with Jack Depper managing to get a TCT car between himself and Olly Turner. While Depper’s mirrors would again be filled with the Yellow and Blue coloured Golf Mk7, a technical issue for the JM Racing driver forced him into the pit lane at the end of the third lap.
Plain sailing for Depper from there ensured that the 21-year-old remained virtually unchallenged until the flag, ending the race with a personal best 40 second gap to Joyce in second. A double podium for the PMR driver moves him up to second in the standings as a result, being followed home by Alden who kept him honest throughout.
Unfortunately for Chris Wallis, he was not able to get his car fixed ahead of the second race after his crash in qualifying left his door caved in. He’ll be hoping for better luck next round as we head to Brands Hatch for the triple-header.
“That race went pretty smoothly for me, I’m happy with the result, though I’m not sure what happened to Olly behind. Before the race I had been hyping myself up for a massive battle but sadly it wasn’t meant to be. My dad told me to get my head down before the race I’ve got to thank him for the coaching he’s given me as well as the support of Maximum Motorsport.”
