WSBK: British sensation Vickers gets wildcard chance with CIA Landlord Insurance Honda
National Superstock 600 championship leader Ryan Vickers has got the opportunity of a life time as he is wildcarding this weekend at Donington Park, with Simon Buckmaster’s CIA Landlord Insurance Honda team in the World Supersport championship. Vickers’ season has captivated the minds of team owners and Dorna bosses alike, with Alan Carter’s protege now with a golden opportunity on the world stage.
The 19-year-old Thetford sensation has set the British scene alight in 2018, securing three wins, as well as taking the last win of the 2017 season. Vickers will partner 2017 British Supersport runner-up Andrew Irwin, as he continues to improve. The announcement of Vickers into the World Supersport championship makes him the latest British rider to be wildcarding at Donington Park, as a whole host of top British talent will make appearances in the Superbike class, with Brad Ray, Luke Mossey and Leon Haslam all showing.
Vickers said, “I’d like to thank CIA Landlord Insurance Honda and everyone involved in making this happen. It is such a huge opportunity for me to get some exposure on the world scene. It is a big step but my coach Alan Carter and I will work very closely with the team and just keep picking away,” he said.
We’ve got no expectations this weekend, I’ll get used to the bike, start to pick up some pace and we’ll just do the best we can and see where we end up,” he concluded. Vickers’ coach, Alan Carter, is no stranger to world championship racing, becoming the youngest rider to win a grand prix (at the time) at the 1983 French GP in the 250cc class.
With Ryan Vickers being one of the hottest talents in the UK, it would be well worth coming to Donington Park on the Sunday to see him race. Tickets on the gate on Sunday are £45 and kids under 13 go free.
